Also ist das Fass sozusagen kurz vorm überlaufen (weil JFK einmal gerettet wurde) und jede weitere kleine Veränderung würde nun eine Katastrophe verursachen?

So habe ich das verstanden, ja.

S. 822 (Scribner-Ausgabe):

Can I really be thinking of risking the world - perhaps reality itself - for the woman I love? That makes Lee's insanity look piddling.

The reply is as obdurate as the past itself: Close the circle.

Die letzte letzten drei zitierten Abschnitte machen das imho recht deutlich: Jake spielt mit dem Gedanken, hinsichtlich Sadie nochmal einzugreifen. Ist kurz davor, es zu tun. Aber er ist sich einfach nicht sicher, ob er es riskieren kann und entscheidet sich letztlich schweren Herzens dafür, dass er seine Liebe nicht über das Schicksal des Unversums, ja der Realität als solches, stellen kann. Das Risiko ist zu groß!

Mir kommts jetzt nicht so vor, als sei das Vorhaben so viel riskanter als das jahrelange Fleischkaufen (warens nicht ~200 mal)

Das jahrelange Fleischkaufen hatte ja auch schon Auswirkungen, das ist es ja. Der Cardman sagt ihm ja, dass es nur augenscheinlich immer ein Reset ist, aber es strenggenommen nicht hundertprozentig so ist, sondern es immer, wenn auch vielleicht nicht gleich sichtbare, Auswirkungen hat. Jakes langer Aufenthalt war dahingehend einfach nur krasser, weil er ja mehr als nur bisschen Fleisch gekauft hat. Er hat entschieden eingegriffen. Und das hat das ganze Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum in Gefahr gebracht. Und der Cardman sagt ihm jetzt, dass er das alles ein aller letztes Mal gerade biegen muss, um die Realität zu retten und er dann wirklich auf keinen Fall auch nur die kleinste Änderung noch vornehmen darf.
Na klar, letztlich können wir nicht wissen, ob eine weitere kleinere Änderung wirklich alles hätte zusammenbrechen lassen. Nur genau damit hadert ja auch Jake. Er fragt sich ja selbst "can the future history of the world be so fragile that it will not allow two high school teachers to meet and fall in love?". Kommt dann aber zum Schluss, dass das Risiko zu groß ist, das herauszufinden. "Can I really be thinking of risking the world - perhaps reality itself - for the woman I love?
